| Dont you realize that their are HUNDREDS of thousands of pounds on that train? Its not like you can just put it full throttle and expect to go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds... If you didnt know, all of those couplers are "cushioned". They have play in them, they can go in and out of their mountings a little bit. This means that the front of the train will move about 150 or so feet before the last car on the train starts to move. All of that slack can break a coupler on the last cars. | CSXTransportation |

| The reason they stretch them out is to avoid breaking a coupler, pulling a drawbar or a derailment where cars are pulled off of the track or pulled over on their sides. All of the tractive effort is transferred to the train through the first drawbar. If they just go full throttle without stretching the train out, the resistance of the train versus the locomotives' tractive effort can cause a break in two, or worse, cause cars to be pulled onto their sides if the train is on any curves. | ngtflyer |
