| I believe its because the 844 and 3985 (which is a Challenger BTW) use superheated steam for the whistles. The superheated steam doesnt leave a smoke plume. | burritofarmer |

| At higher speeds, the whistle cord is often pulled harder, resulting in a higher pitched sound. In addition, there is a simulated Doppler effect, which further increases the pitch. And since the engine is almost doing 80, the effect is very pronounced. | burritofarmer |
