Thanks. Yea that thing was flying, those trains tend to fly through the Nevada desert. That object was a fly at 1:03. The fly was hanging around my face, camera, everything, freaking annoying. The second unit was UP 2001 the Olympic Tortch unit.CoastStarlight11
Boy that baby is in super high gear. What was that object flying at 1:03, shortly after your hand flew by right front of the camera. Also what kind of loco, and roadname was the second unit? Nice video.sittinsidewayzz
I have shot vid in Winnemucca, Nevada. I have vid on my youtube account of Amtrak's California Zephyr makeing a stop in Winnemucca as well as a UP train passing through Winnemucca. I have also videoed UP trains every where from Doyle, California to Pulga, California on the Feather River Canyon Line. One place I want to go to is Gerlach, Nevada. I heard that there is a nice crossing out in Gerlach and the Black Rock Desert area. Also I heard that Sand Pass is a cool place.CoastStarlight11
Thanks for the great vids!! Have you ever considered doing one along the ex-WP route between Winnemucca and Susanville, CA??gringging
LOL!CoastStarlight11
LOL. I think it was 1989 or something? Yeah 1989. LOLCSXTransportation
Thanks!!!! This thing sure was going fast through this crossing.CoastStarlight11
Hot vid James! He was screamin'!theup3985
He Improperly Blew that crossing, Anyone get his Engine Number?ibuy4unow
its like if the heritage units went east of chicago they'de turn into pumpkins or something.2005GLI
Yea that would be quite a site to see the heritage units in the east instead of their usual territory. Generally the Katy tends to stay around the Texas area so this was some what of a rare site to see the Katy by me in northern Nevada when I shot this vid.CoastStarlight11
Thanks!!!!CoastStarlight11
I wish UP would let these heritage units go further east then chicago. I'de love to see the Katy unit out here in NJ or any heritage unit for that matter.2005GLI
Nice video! And the UP actually has some mainline allowing it's trains to stretch their legs and go faster than 40 mph!voiceonthehill
I once met an old lady who knew alot about the Tonopah shortline that ran through Hawthorne down to there. Now it's mainly military use, I guess, but there used to be quite a bit of old cars and stuff down in Luning and Mina just east of the highway. You might check it out.Shufei
Yesh, cabeese = cabooses. :P I used to see them alot on freight trains through Reno in the 80's, but not now... I just like them. :>Shufei
Good to hear it. :> When I was little we took a train for a field trip from Reno to Truckee and back. Somehow people stopped doing that sort of trip in America, regularly. Of course in Europe and Asia, trains are still the way to go. The soft-sleepers on cross China trips are fun; you get to see the landscape changes south of the Jiangzi... Haha, because of the rarity, somehow riding American trains seem more exotic to me! :DShufei
Yea all engines are diesel. Steam has not been used since the 1950's. The Union Pacific Railroad has two steam engines that they have toure the country during the spring, summers, and fall. Are you talking about Cabooses? Those have not been used since like I think the 1980's if not earler than that.CoastStarlight11
I road Amtrak not all that long ago, actually went right through Lovelock (LOL). The train was packed with people. You can board the train in Reno or Winnemucca and ride it all the way to Chicago or over Donner Pass to Emeryville. I have ridden it many times round trip between Reno and Chicago.CoastStarlight11
I've been wondering for a while if railtravel will start making a comeback on this continent, what with gas prices and all. Do you see signs of this? Also, all engines are now diesel, right? Oh, and are cabeese still in use in the area? Last one I saw was in Reno in 1988...Shufei
Well, I was born in Reno, but my grandfather was a gentleman prospector cum historian. We spent some time in the hills north and south of here. Dry placers, mostly. Oreana's just one of those funky Nevada towns: unloved and overlooked, yet content unto itself, somehow. Next time I'm up yonder maybe I'll make a vid to post in response. :)Shufei
, i was on the east end of upper valley road. Talked to some people who were passing by and also met up with these old rancer people who own a big chunk of land around the east end of Upper Valley Road.CoastStarlight11
When I say search rye patch I mean searching youtube. I was also up on that bridge on Upper Valley Road not to long ago shooting vids of trains. You know you take the Coal Canyon Exit if you are heading east on 80 then turn left, cross the bridge, then you come to some industry and make a right on upper valley road.CoastStarlight11
Back in 2006 I was doing a video shoot of a UP Z train at that crossing and I was talking to this guy behind a fence by that what looks like a junk yard or something brefly telling him what I was seeing. I know some of the rail crews that work this line between Reno and Winnemucca. Good buddies of mine.CoastStarlight11
Wow. Did not realize you live by that Oreana crossing. There is like a junk yard thing there or something like that on the other side opposite of there I was standing, do you ever go there? If you search Oreana you can see other shots I have taken of that crossing and also if you search "Lovelock Nevada" you can see a lot of shots I have taken around that crossing and around Lovelock, you can also search "rye patch nevada".CoastStarlight11
